Frequent consumption of sugary drinks and foods increases the acidity in the mouth, as a result of which the enamel is damaged and destroyed. Healthy cereals, which have been constantly advertised lately, actually contain large amounts of sugar.
The constant consumption of sweets, chocolates, candies, carbonated drinks, allows the sugar to stick to the teeth.
The microorganisms in the oral cavity process this sugar and turn it into acids, and these acids lead to demineralization of the teeth, spoil the enamel. As a result of this process, caries occurs, as well as other dental problems.
Dr. Nigel Carter of the British Dental Health Foundation says it is not so much how much sugar is ingested at once, but how often, at least that is the case with oral hygiene. He believes that if you eat something sweet once a day, it would not hurt your teeth so much.
However, if only sugary foods are consumed every few hours, this will increase the acidity in the mouth and it will remain high for a long time.
This in turn means that the teeth will decay much faster. The risks are really high - according to statistics, one third of children in Europe between 5 and 12 years old have decayed teeth.
A study was conducted by the University of Illinois, the results of which show that the accumulated dental plaque after a meal when consuming a popular breakfast cereal with water, milk or apple juice is different in acidity.
Volunteers from the study were sampled half an hour after breakfast. They show that when eating breakfast cereal with a different drink, the pH is different.
With apple juice the pH is 5.83, for water - 6.02, and with fresh milk at 6.48. The results of the study are published in the Journal of the American Dental Association.
Lower pH levels actually mean higher acidity in the mouth, that is, a glass of milk after a meal will keep your teeth healthy for longer. Milk remineralizes teeth and neutralizes acidity in the mouth.
