Experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) found the presence of salmonella in chicken. During a routine inspection in the warehouses and processing base of a large chicken producer in Pernik, more than 1 ton of products infected with the bacterium were found.

The BFSA is quick to reassure people that the two bacterial serotypes found in the study of the meat in question are Salmonella Derby and Salmonella Infantis, which are low pathogenic.

This, experts say, means that even if people have eaten infected meat, they are unlikely to show any symptoms of infection. The first signs of salmonella infection are vomiting and diarrhea, often with fever.

It is still unclear about the source of the infection. The processing enterprise from Pernik bought the chicken meat from another large producer from Stara Zagora.

The parallel extraordinary inspection of the BFSA experts did not find any deviations in the quality of the meat in the warehouses of the producer company from Stara Zagora.

The Director of the Regional Office of the BFSA in Stara Zagora - Dr. Damyan Mikov, confirmed that the warehouses of zaralii are "clean" and admitted that it may be a secondary infection of the meat during his trip between Stara Zagora and the warehouses of the recipient company in Pernik.

The names of the companies accused in the scandal are kept secret because, according to the BFSA: "We would not like to discredit them. The meat has not been placed on the market and there is no danger of infecting people."

An administrative sanction was imposed on the poultry processor from Pernik. The work on establishing the exact foci and mechanisms of the infection continues.

Until then, extraordinary inspections will be carried out on the territory of retail outlets and catering establishments where risky foods are offered.
