Although Babinden is one of the most beautiful women's holidays, we are well aware that much of the Bulgarian traditions and customs are gradually lost over time.

We are convinced that not all children know what exactly is celebrated on Babinden and consider it a feast of all grandmothers. And we can't blame them if we haven't explained to them the meaning of this holiday, namely that Babinden was worshiped by those grandmothers-women who "grandmothers" during the birth of the children and took care of them until The 40th day since they came into the world. They were healers, fortune tellers and fortune tellers at the same time.

Today Babinden, which is officially celebrated on January 8 (in many parts of Bulgaria continues to be celebrated on January 21 in the old style) is a holiday of all obstetricians and gynecologists.

But before we show you what you must attend Babinden's table, let's go back in time a bit. On this date, for health reasons, the grandmothers had to visit all the women who had given birth during the year, to wash their child, for which they themselves helped to be born alive and well, and then to invite everyone home for a feast.

Grandmothers, who played the role of midwives, served their guests bread, carnival, bow, pie or burek. In different parts of Bulgaria there are different customs regarding Babinden's table, but it was obligatory for honey to be present at the table. Some "grandmothers" also made buns, cookies or other small cakes.

For their part, the visiting women prepared the rest of the table as a token of gratitude. Half of the food they prepared should be for the "grandmother" and the other half for a common feast.

Every woman brought what she cooked and there were no strict rules. Lean and meat dishes were also served. Chicken was often stuffed or kavarma was prepared. But lean sarma or bean stew is also typical.

We told you all this so that you understand that except for the bread, the carnival or the pie prepared by the hostess, as well as the served honey, there are no other basic rules for Babinden's table. It was only important for everyone to have a tasty and festive one!
