The flu affects a large number of people during epidemics each year. The fight against its complications has been going on for a long time, but no effective way has yet been found to prevent the involvement of organs and systems with a long-lasting effect, and sometimes even death.
Unexpectedly, a team of scientists from Yale University came to an interesting conclusion as a result of experiments with mice. The bottom line is that ketogenic diets, made up of more high-fat foods and carbohydrate-free foods, are able to protects the body against influenza viruses.
How did the Yale University team come to this conclusion?
Experiments have shown that feeding test specimens to keto foods increases the number of cells in the immune system that protect the body from influenza infections.
It is known that at keto diet the body burns fat to convert it into energy, which is necessary for life processes. This causes weight loss. People get flu-like symptoms and therefore call them keto-like because of the body's process of adapting to low carbs. The keto diet has a beneficial effect on heart health and blood sugar levels.
However, Yale researchers also found that this type of diet reduces the inflammatory process in mice with gout. Inflammation is characteristic of both gout and influenza and this leads them to believe that the diet will work in the same way and in influenza conditions.
To test this hypothesis, they subjected experimental mice to ketogenic nutritionand then infect them with influenza type A, which is the most dangerous. They infect another group of mice with the same virus without being subjected to this diet. After 4 days, all mice that were on a common diet died. In those on the keto diet, half survive. In addition, those who have been on a diet do not lose weight, which is typical of influenza conditions.
Studies of mice have shown that the number of T cells on which the body's immune response to infections has increased has increased. This gives a result in a significant percentage of them.
Scientists realize that metabolic processes in humans and mice are different, but the hope is that humans will receive the same protection if they are on a keto diet.
The experiment shows that the assumption of a link between nutrition and the immune system is true. Everyone knows that vitamin C boosts immunity. It is now clear that the keto diet can also improve the immune response and this should be kept in mind when fighting infections and when looking for flu diet.
