On Halloween, for which many Bulgarians argue whether we should celebrate it or not, it turns out that Bulgaria is the largest producer of the symbol of this holiday - the pumpkin.

According to Eurostat data for the territory of the European Union, Bulgaria is the largest producer of pumpkins. But for the whole of Europe, the leading producer is Turkey.

In 2016, 133,000 tons of orange vegetables were produced in our country, which are traditionally used to make terrifying Halloween lanterns.

With these figures, Bulgarian producers registered a serious increase in pumpkin production. In just one year, they produced 25,200 tons more.

In this curious ranking in second place is Spain with 97,000 tons of pumpkins produced, third place is for France with 96,000 tons of pumpkins, and the top 5 is completed by Germany and Portugal.

But if we take into account the countries that are outside the territory of the European Union, but are located on the territory of the Old Continent, Bulgaria gives its first place to Turkey. 138,000 tons were produced there in one year.

An interesting trend is observed in Romania. While in our country the number of pumpkins is growing every year, in our northern neighbor it is progressively decreasing - in less than 5 years they have fallen by 60,000 tons.
