Apart from the fact that oranges are very refreshing, tasty and an excellent source of vitamin C, it turns out that they also have unsuspected medical benefits for our health.
A key new study from Tohuku University in Japan found that eating one orange a day can reduce the risk of dementia by a quarter, according to Mail Online.
The research team found that citrus fruits, including oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes and grapefruits, can reduce the risk of developing a disease that affects memory, personality and reasoning. They help prevent brain damage that leads to dementia or Alzheimer's.
The reason for the wonderful effect of these fruits is their citric acid, which contains the flavonoid nobiletin (phytochemical), which has been shown to slow down or stop the deterioration of memory in previous studies.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study covered more than 13,000 middle-aged and adult men and women over seven years. Those who ate citrus fruits every day were 23% less likely to develop dementia than participants who ate citrus fruits less than twice a week.
Some laboratory studies have shown that citrus fruits can have a preventive effect against cognitive impairment, said the researchers.
However, the study has not yet fully examined the relationship between citrus consumption and the incidence of dementia. Studies have unequivocally shown that frequent consumption of citrus is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia.
