Mass inspections for the quality of fruits and vegetables on the markets in our country are starting. Inspectors from the Food Agency will monitor the origin, quality and shelf life of the vegetables.

The BFSA told the Bulgarian National Radio that the purpose of the inspections is to protect consumers from unfair traders.

Meanwhile, it became clear this Thursday that 80% of the fruit and vegetables on the market are imported from abroad. Although most traders offer their goods as Bulgarian production, a small part of it is really like that.

This was confirmed by Mariana Miltenova from the National Union of Gardeners in Bulgaria. According to her, the main problem is that in the last 15 years Bulgarian products are deliberately destroyed, which is the main reason why our fruits and vegetables are more expensive than imported ones.

Dr. Svetozar Vassilev told the Monitor newspaper that about half of the Bulgarian production does not reach the stand in the store at all, but is discarded because it is not stored properly.

The deficit of Bulgarian fruits and vegetables is strongest during the summer months, because the warmer temperatures then ruin the goods more easily. Only for one or two warmer nights can spoil large amounts of greens if not stored properly.

In order to preserve the few remaining domestic products, it is necessary for Bulgarian farmers to unite. Only in this way can the goods then reach the large retail chains and even the Western European markets, says Dr. Vassilev.

Last year, the producers in our country suffered great losses, not only because of the torrents throughout the year, but also because of the embargo that Russia imposed on goods from the European Union.

Apart from the fact that entire industries no longer exported their products to Russia, a large part of Western countries directed their goods to our markets so as not to suffer a loss. However, competition has led to losses for domestic producers.

At the moment there are large imports of greens in our country from the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Greece and Spain.
