One of the most popular weight loss regimens, known as the "Pierre Ducan Diet", has sparked worldwide controversy in recent months.
Dr. Pierre Ducan is a French nutritionist, the way the Guru of the protein regime. Ducan filed a lawsuit against his colleague, nutritionist Jean-Michel Cohen. The latter claims that Dukan's diet is harmful to health for the following reasons: it raises cholesterol, causes cardiovascular disease and even causes lung cancer.
Dukan's diet provides an "attacking stage" in which shock protein consumption is induced. For Cohen and many other nutritionists, this type is considered dangerous because it causes an imbalance in the body.
Cohen offers a much less strenuous weight loss regimen, with reduced calorie intake in the range between 900 and 1600 calories per day, which does not exclude exercise, especially useful for weight loss.
In Bulgaria, the Ducan diet is widespread. But one of our leading nutritionists, Prof. Donka Baikova, is not among her supporters.
Baykova, who is the director of the Association of Dietetics, says that excluding fruits from the diet deprives the body of carbohydrates.
"The brain suffers the most from this. As a result, a person thinks slowly, is uncritical and continues the diet addicted like a zombie," Dr. Baikova told Monitor.
According to her, express weight loss is extremely harmful, as it is a real stress for the body. The staggering speed at which you lose weight by consuming only indigestible proteins does not allow him to remember every level of his new weight.
Then, when you first go out of the diet, the weight returns. The proteins in meat and dairy products, which are emphasized in Dukan's diet for a long period of time, put a strain on all systems and organs, and the liver begins to suffer first.
Without the juices of fruits and vegetables in the body and the fiber in them, the acetones, aldehydes and ketones released during the breakdown of proteins become a real toxic bomb for the body, as they fail to be broken down and excreted in the urine.
According to Prof. Baykova, when vegetables are included in the second or third week, as required by Pierre Ducan's diet, it is too late for many. In addition, protein foods in the human body are broken down into urea, creatinine and uric acid. They are hepatotoxic.
Urea damages liver hepatocytes, which in fact help this organ to rid the body of toxins.
At the same time, toxic wastes from overconsumption of animal proteins trigger gout and the formation of non-degradable urate stones in the kidneys.
A menu packed with saturated fatty acids in Ducan's diet raises levels of bad cholesterol, which in turn leads to cardiovascular complications.
