Croatian cuisine is something unknown to Bulgarians. It interweaves motifs from the Hungarian and Australian culinary traditions, together with its own specifics.
Typical dishes in Croatian cuisine include grilled meats, sheep cheese, red pepper salami, Dalmatian smoked ham, salted anchovies and štruklji. Štrukli is actually the Croatian pie. Like us, the Bulgarians, the Croats love this delicious pasta and often eat it.
There are different specialties in each area. Among the most popular, which have become the eponym of their place of production, are fried cheese, Zagreb beef cutlet, a la Backa chicken (with tomatoes, peppers and onions) and others. Seafood delicacies in combination with fine wines can be tasted on the Dalmatian coast. One of the many advantages of Croatian cuisine is that it is comprehensive in the menu and you can find all kinds of food, from meat to pastries.
Croatian pie Štrukli
Necessary products: For the dough: 4 tsp. flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1 egg, 2 tbsp. oil, 1 tbsp. vinegar, 100 ml of lukewarm water.
For the filling: 600 g cottage cheese, 100 g soft butter, 4 eggs, 100 ml sour cream, salt, pepper.
For spreading: cream, grated cheese, salt, a little butter.
Method of preparation: The flour is sifted with salt. Make a well in the middle and beat an egg. Add the butter and mix with a fork. A little lukewarm water is mixed with the vinegar and gradually added to the dough.
Knead the dough with your hands until it becomes smooth, elastic, soft and slightly sticky. It is divided into three equal parts. Each of them is smeared with a brush with oil and covered with a towel. Leave to stand for 30 minutes.
During this time, prepare the filling. Mix the soft butter with the cottage cheese, eggs, sour cream, salt and pepper.
One ball of dough is placed on the floured kitchen counter. Roll out as thin as possible. Then stretch slightly with the palms of your hands. The resulting thick edges are cut.
Half of the rolled bread is spread with the filling. Roll up with your hands, pressing lightly. Cut in half and arrange in a greased pan. Rectangular pieces with well-glued edges should be obtained. This is how the other dough balls are prepared.
Once ordered, spread the pie with cream mixed with a little salt. Sprinkle with grated cheese and add butter cubes. Bake for about 40 minutes in a preheated 200 degree oven. Dumplings are served slightly chilled.
