The ox language / Phyllitis scolopendrium / is a perennial fern with a short rhizome, from which large, leathery and long leaves with a short stalk emerge. The rhizome is dense and covered with scales at the top. The herb has a green color, odorless, but bitter taste. The spores of the ox tongue ripen in July-August.
The ox language is one of the most common species in the Fern Department in Bulgaria. It grows in shady, humid and rocky places, mainly in deciduous forests. It occurs up to 1800 meters above sea level. Apart from our country, the bovine language is found in Southern, Western and Central Europe.
Earlier, the ox language was used in official medicine, but now it is used only in folk medicine. The leaves of the herb soothe cough and pain.
Composition in ox tongue
In ox tongue mucous and tannins were found, as well as free acids such as glutamic and aspartic acid. Bull tongue contains a number of unidentified ingredients.
The usable part of the ox language are the leaves without stalks, which are collected in late September and October, when the spores at the bottom of the leaves have acquired a brown color.

As mentioned, the leaves of the herb are collected in late September and October. They are dried in a dry and ventilated place. The dried herb can also be purchased from pharmacies and specialized herbal stores for less than BGN 2.
Benefits of ox tongue
The ox language has a beneficial effect on bronchitis and tracheitis, chronic nephritis, spleen diseases, congestion. The leaves of the ox tongue have an emollient effect, soothe pain and cough.
They have some anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effects. The herb is used for coughs, kidney and biliary inflammatory diseases, chest pain.
Folk medicine with ox tongue
Bulgarian folk medicine recommends the use of ox tongue in aqueous pleurisy, diseases of the spleen, inflammation of the kidneys. 1 tbsp. of the herb is poured with 400 ml of boiling water and left to soak for 1 hour. Drink 1 glass of wine 3 times daily before meals.
Decoction of the herb is prepared by pouring 10 g of dry ox tongue with 1 liter of boiling water, boil for 15 minutes and strain. The decoction is taken warm, 1 tsp. before meals.
Extract of the herb has a strong calming effect on the mucous membranes of the bronchi and trachea. Liquefies phlegm and relieves breathing, suppresses coughing fits.
As a result of the disinfecting and anti-inflammatory action, the inflammatory processes in the airways subside quickly. The herb has a diuretic effect and soothes spasms of internal organs.
In German folk medicine the ox language used in chronic enteritis. In the form of tea, the herb is used in chronic nephritis with severe albuminuria.
Harms from ox tongue
In case of overdose, liver damage may occur, so it is recommended to take the herb carefully and in the recommended daily dose. Bovine tongue can cause allergic dermatitis.
It should not be taken by pregnant, lactating women or children under 14 years of age. Not recommended for people with kidney failure. Before taking decoctions and infusions of ox tongue consult a specialist.
