Nutritionists recommend that parents give their children only water to reduce blood sugar levels. Experts say that kids should not drink fizzy drinks.

According to experts, the intake of natural juices should also be limited for children, and the recommended amount that is allowed to them is one small glass a day with breakfast.

Low-fat milk is not forbidden by nutritionists, but they remind that during the day children should drink mainly water.

"The problem is that a lot of people don't drink water anymore. Be modest at dinner, just add water, no soda, juices or syrups," said Professor Tom Sanders of King's College London.

His opinion is supported by Professor Susan Jeb of Oxford University, who says that the best advice that can be given to parents is simply to give their children the amount of water they need for the day.

The recommendation is related to the results of a draft report by the British Advisory Scientific Committee on Nutrition, according to which people should halve their sugar intake in order to limit the epidemic of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Nutritionists insist that carbonated drinks be excluded from the menu of both children and adults, and they should be drunk only around the big holidays, as was the case in Bulgaria in the years before 1989.

With the current 10% of daily sugar intake, the new recommendations are to reduce it to 5% of all energy sources. In this case, just one pitcher of soda provides the entire daily amount of sugar.

Last month, a British study found that children and teenagers consumed about 40% more sugar than recommended, with carbonated drinks and fruit juices being the main sources. Adults consume 13% more sugar.

The research was published in the Daily Telegraph, and British nutritionists warned of the need to reduce daily sugar intake.
