Grog is an alcoholic beverage made from rum, cognac or vodka and hot water or tea. This is one of the most common drinks that warm people during the cold winter days. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most popular winter cocktails, which is world famous, and there are many ways to prepare it.
It can be said that grog, as well as other hot alcoholic cocktails, are just as tempting as their summer versions. They are easy to make and do not include many ingredients, but their taste is impressive and their main property is warming.
History of grog
The history of the emergence of grog is extremely interesting because, despite its alcohol content, the drink is designed to fight alcoholism.
The grog was originally introduced into the Royal Navy in 1740 by Vice Admiral Edward Vernen, who was known by his nickname Old grogbecause he always walked on the deck of the ship with a waterproof cloak made of grogram (silk, wool and mohair fabric).
It is a very interesting fact that the Vice Admiral aimed to combat drunkenness, because in his time the sailors were given about 280 ml of rum a day, which in turn led to constant drunken quarrels and problems. The abolition of this interesting rule did not happen until 1970.
Vernon did not have the right to reduce the ration, but changed its quality - diluted the rum with warm water. At first, this act caused sharp dissatisfaction, and the drink received the mocking name Grog by the nickname of the admiral himself.
Over time, however, grog becomes a favorite drink not only at sea but also on land. Gradually, lemon juice, sugar and various spices began to be added to the grog - ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and others, and instead of hot water, the grog began to be prepared with strong black tea.
The combination of rum with water, nutmeg and sugar has been very popular in the past, especially among merchants and pirates.
Preparation of grog
Nowadays, there are hundreds of variants of grog. The classic recipe for grog is to add rum to brewed black tea, then add sugar and drink hot. Due to the different tastes and preferences, however, everyone can prepare grog as they wish and rum is not a constant. It can easily be replaced with whiskey or cognac.
The basic rule in the preparation of grog is that the alcohol should not be heated, but added at the end. Various spices are added to the water or tea - cinnamon, black peppercorns, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves and more. After the mixture boils, remove from the heat, add lemon, sugar and rum.

For coffee fans we offer an incredible grog with coffee. For its preparation you need 100 ml of coffee, 2 tsp. sugar syrup and 20 ml of rum (cognac). Pour the hot coffee into a preheated tall grog cup, add the rum and sugar syrup. Stir gently and drink immediately.
The next option is grog, sweetened with honey. The required products are 2 tsp. honey, 50 ml of rum, 150 ml of hot black tea and a slice of lemon. It is very easy to make - pour into a tall cup of tea, add honey, lemon and finally the rum.
In both recipes the choice of spices is according to individual taste, but for grog with coffee it is best to put cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves, and in grog with honey the most suitable are cardamom or ginger.
The following recipe for grog is a little more atypical, but on the other hand the result is a very fragrant and warming drink. Necessary products are 450 ml of cointreau liqueur, 200 ml of tea, 250 ml of rum, 100 ml of orange juice, a pinch of cinnamon, a little cloves, a cinnamon stick and an orange for decoration.
Preparation: heat the rum, cointreau, cinnamon and orange juice in a saucepan. Stir the mixture well and remove from the heat just before boiling. Pour over the tea and distribute in cups. The drink is decorated with orange slices, which are sprinkled with cloves.
In the Scandinavian countries there is a special custom according to which grog should be prepared by the guest in a house with a ratio of ingredients according to his individual preferences.
