Enterprising young Spaniards have found salvation from the crisis in gourmet foods made from special seaweed.
Alberto and Sergio, who graduated in biology and marine science, regularly dive into the Galician sea in search of their next catch. Young men collect seaweed from the bottom, process it and sell it as fine food.
The two Spaniards even harnessed all their knowledge and created the innovative company Conservas Mar de Ardora, which has been operating successfully for two years, writes agronovinite.com.
Our task is not easy at all, but we are purposeful and we will succeed, says 33-year-old Sergio Baamonte.
The company uses mainly seaweed, which it turns into gourmet food. In Galicia, this practice has existed for more than thirty years. Specialists try to stand out in the market with quality. They treat algae with natural methods and categorically reject the use of preparations and preservatives.
In the Spanish market, such foods are consumed quickly, says another co-founder, Alberto Sanchez, who has previously looked closely at the topic at the Biomedical Research Center in Barcelona.
In the summer, young men dive for algae every morning. They also use special equipment for this purpose. Conservas Mar de Ardora experts already know where to look for what they need. They take mainly algae konmpou and kontium, and their catch often exceeds 20 kilograms per day.
To make their idea a reality, the two Spaniards have invested all their savings. After taking out a bank loan, they start with an initial capital of 300,000 euros. Luckily for them, Conservas Mar de Ardora was working full steam ahead and they soon realized that all their efforts were worth it.
In the course of its work, the company has established links with many local restaurants and famous chefs. Now the boys from Conservas Mar de Ardora are working on a new research project on the use of sea urchins.
According to official data from the Spanish Ministry of the Environment, annual sales of seaweed food amount to more than 3.8 million euros.
