The Bulgarian throws away more than 7,000 tons of food after each holiday. This is to be repeated after St. George's Day.
Restaurants, households and hotels - these are the three main components that generate the bulk of food waste. The consequences of long holidays and rich meals do not correspond to the fact that we are the poorest country in the European Union.
670,000 tons of food are thrown away every year in Bulgaria alone. Its quantity is 1 billion tons worldwide. Each of us throws away 173 kg of food a year. The largest quantities are around the holidays. In the days around Easter, for example, the amount of food waste increased by more than a third.
Only 10% of the food we throw away can be saved. It must reach the user within a few hours after the heat treatment. And when the deadline passes, although fit, this food goes to waste. Fortunately, more and more people are finding an alternative to giving it to people in need.
To be donated, the food must be within the expiration date. However, the remains of restaurants and households go directly to the garbage.
Statistically, about 43% of the food that falls into the trash comes from households. The food, which is discarded only by the European Union, could feed twice as many people in the world - nearly 1 billion people.
