The US Food and Drug Administration has given the green light to the cultivation and sale of genetically modified salmon. The decision was delayed for 5 years, during which experts assessed whether it posed a health risk.

According to the data of the agency, there are no clearly noticeable differences in the nutritional profile between the engineered species and the ones grown in the so-called farms.

The permit will bring greater profits to the industry. GMO salmon grow twice as fast as the natural species and make up to twice as much profit. This will lead to lower cost, more consumption and higher profits.

In GMO salmon is added growth hormone from chinook and ocean eel. In its natural form, growth hormone is active only at certain times of the year. In engineering improvements, however, it can be kept active all year round.

The opinion of experts from the US Food and Drug Administration is that there is no direct evidence of the dangers of consuming GMO foods.

However, there are no such that they are safe. The engineered fish is called the Franken Fish by its opponents. According to them, its consumption can lead to allergies.

They are also concerned that if the larger species is released into the natural environment, it could lead to the extinction of the natural species. There is also the question of the ethical rule that does not allow the engineering production of animal species.

This is the first time that the US government has officially authorized the consumption of a modified animal species. However, it turns out that American citizens are rather reluctant to consume such products.

The consumer union is pushing for the labeling of these products, but their manufacturers are trying to avoid it. At the moment, most store owners are adamant that despite the permit, they will not sell GMO salmon, as they believe there will be no demand.
