Israeli and American experts have conducted research, based on which they claim that grapefruit is a fruit that can actively help in the fight against diabetes.
According to the authors of the study, this delicious, bitter citrus contains many useful antioxidants. One that can be involved in the fight against diabetes is the antioxidant naringenin. It is abundant in citrus fruit and it is due to its bitter taste.
Experts believe that naringenin does the same job as two separate drugs prescribed to control type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a disease that develops when the body is unable to produce enough insulin, a hormone needed to regulate blood sugar. This includes the role of the naringenin. It increases the body's sensitivity to insulin.
The antioxidant also helps diabetics maintain a healthy weight, which is essential in the treatment of the disease. Weight gain puts diabetics at risk for health problems and reduces the effectiveness of insulin.
Naringenin works by causing the liver to burn fat instead of storing it, said study leader Dr. Jacob Nahmias of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Through naringenin, grapefruit helps remove old red blood cells, making it extremely beneficial for the cardiovascular system.
Grapefruit juice is used as a powerful anti-constipation remedy to improve digestion by enhancing the secretion of gastric juices.
Cholesterol is reduced by galacturonic acid and pectin, which are abundant in grapefruit. 100 g of grapefruit contains 34-46 calories and 0.5-1.0 g of protein.
100 g of grapefruit juice in turn contains 37-42 calories and 0.4-0.5 g of protein. Grapefruit is also rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin A.
