Flower teas are very common not only in China, the homeland of tea, but also anywhere else in the world. They are so called because flowers such as lotus, rose, jasmine, lychee and others are added to the main tea leaves. In Bulgaria we call such teas herbal and we do not add real tea to them, but we make infusion only from the respective flowers or herbs that are mostly dried. A typical example of this is chamomile tea.

According to Chinese philosophy, however, real tea leaves should always be added to the colors, because otherwise it is debatable to say whether we drink tea or just colored water.

Here's what's important to know for colored teas and how you can make them yourself, in this case the Asian, or more precisely the Chinese concept of tea:

1. To make your own flower tea, you should know that the right combination, which is valid in almost all cases, is that the aroma of brewed flower tea is about 70% in favor of the tea itself and about 30% of the flower;

2. What kind of flower will you choose and what kind of tea; depends on your taste preferences, but it is considered that strong teas are mixed with flowers that have a strong aroma and vice versa - flowers with a less pronounced aroma are mixed with weaker teas;

3. Typical for China combinations are the mixing of red tea with rose or lychee, golden lotus with green tea and perhaps the most popular - green tea with jasmine;

4. Most Chinese flower teas get their name from the name of the flower that was used to make them;

5. Colored teas are flavored up to 4 times, and if they are flavored / smoked 4 times, it means that the tea is really high quality. Teas that are flavored only once; are considered inferior, are drunk by the poor and are never served to guests;

6. When serving flower tea, you can, for aesthetics, add a leaf from the flower itself directly to the cup or put it in the saucer next to it;

7. Although in Bulgaria it is accepted to drink flower tea or herbal teas with honey, avoid putting it directly in the jug. You have to feel the real taste and aroma of the tea, and anyone who wants can add an additional sweetener according to their individual preferences.
