Tangerines dyed with synthetic dye have reappeared on our markets, announced Professor Donka Baikova to the Bulgarian National Television. She advises washing the fruit thoroughly before eating, preferably with a brush and soap.

Professor Baykova claims that tangerine dyes can cause allergies in children.

In front of BNT, viewers signal that they bought tangerines sprayed with orange paint, which remained on their fingers when they peeled the fruit. In the market, however, they looked juicy and eye-catching.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency clarifies that the use of fruit dyes is allowed and is unpunished. However, this is only a surface treatment, and with certain substances.

The Food Agency claims that they are completely harmless and will not cause any side effects. They consist mainly of colored wax and a glossing agent of organic origin, which is spread on the skin and does not penetrate through it through the core of the fruit.

According to Professor Baykova, however, some of these dyes are of synthetic origin and are the cause of hyperexcitability in children, as well as the appearance of skin rashes and asthma attacks.

The expert advises not to underestimate the washing of the fruit, using a brush, soap and gloves, so as not to get some of the paint on your hands.
