Potatoes can lead to type 2 diabetes if consumed in excessive amounts. Seven or more meals a week increase this risk by more than 33%.
A new medical study has found that potato dishes can be not only delicious but also dangerous. It turns out that seven or more of them consumed over a period of one week may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to consuming a similar meal over the same period. Even two to four meals can increase this risk by up to 10%.
The medical test was conducted at the Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Osaka. Scientists have found that although potatoes are considered a vegetable, they should not be considered a healthy component of the diet.
Fried potatoes turned out to be the most harmful in the first place. Boiled, baked, and mashed potatoes have much better qualities, but they can also be overdone.
The data obtained are explained by the fact that potatoes contain a huge amount of starch and minimal amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber and polyphenols. It is low-quality carbohydrates that increase the risk of developing the disease.
At the beginning of the study, the participants were completely healthy. They did not suffer from any cardiovascular disease, diabetes or cancer. In the study, researchers looked at the eating habits of more than 100,000 people in the United States and how they affect their health.

Finally, there was an irrefutable link between potato consumption and the development of diabetes. It turned out that factors such as lifestyle, body fat, body weight and diet did not affect the results.
Tests show that when root vegetables are served warm, the starch in them is digested much easier. In this way, blood glucose rises much faster.
It has been found that if we replace three of the portions of potatoes with whole grains, the risk of diabetes is reduced by up to 12%. In general, the consumption of all kinds of healthy foods such as fruits, nuts and vegetables reduces this risk, scientists say.
