The health ministry will fight the nation's obesity by introducing an excise tax on harmful foods. The tax is expected to be about 3 percent of their value.

The non-traditional measure is expected to be enshrined in the new food law, which experts are currently working on.

According to the experts' proposal, products that have a higher content of salt, sugar and fat will be subject to an additional tax in the form of excise duty.

Products high in caffeine and hydrogenated fats will also be taxed.

The aim of the new measure will be to reduce the price of harmful products by reducing their consumption, and hence the obesity of the population, which in recent years has reached epidemic proportions.

It is expected that the discussed excise duty on harmful food will mainly affect the products that are currently on the banned list for sale in school shops and canteens.

According to the estimates of the health authorities and the Ministry of Finance, the new excise tax can bring an additional BGN 150 million a year to the treasury.

If the Ministry of Health's proposal is accepted, then foods identified as harmful will have to be specially labeled and marked with excise labels such as cigarettes and alcohol.

As expected, the project of the Ministry of Health is not met with indifference by producers and traders, who believe that the measure could lead to job losses.

Companies in the field believe that there are no clear criteria by which food will be defined as harmful.

They point out that the Ministry of Health has not specified the exact parameters of the amounts of salt, sugar, fat and caffeine that will be considered harmful.
