Studies show that drinking sugary fizzy drinks increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Consumption of bread and drinks that are high in sugar could contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide, mainly due to type 2 diabetes, a new study warns.
The results show that the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to 180,000 deaths a year worldwide, including 25,000 deaths a year in the United States, the researchers said. However, the most endangered are the poor countries, where the way of eating is not paid much attention.
Previous studies have already shown how drinking sweets carbonated drinks increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. However, the new study gives a realistic estimate of how big this problem really is.
The researchers studied the 2010 data of the World Health Organization and include data from 114 countries. This is 80% of the world's population. They calculate the ratio between body mass indices, sugar consumption of beverages and deaths from various diseases.
The actual reported results are 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 44,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 6,000 deaths from cancer.
The statistics are alarming, but it must be emphasized that it is not the drinking of these drinks that causes these deaths. Statistics simply show that people who drink sugary drinks are the same ones who suffer from these diseases.
Researchers make a huge leap when they calculate the intake of beverages around the world and find that they are the cause of chronic diseases that eventually lead to death.
In its statement, the American Association states that if humanity wants to improve its quality of nutrition, then in addition to limiting sugar intake, salt intake must be balanced, as well as everything else that is harmful to the body, leading to more -good health.
Research will undoubtedly raise many questions about the impact of sweet drinks on human health. The results will be formally made available to a number of world powers to take action to address the problem.
