Cake and cheesecake were made by the ancients when they discovered flour. In ancient times, bread was distinguished from the cake in that it contained sweet ingredients - most often used fruit or honey.

During excavations, the remains of such cakes were found in Neolithic settlements - they consisted of crushed grains, which were sprinkled with water and honey, pressed to get something like a loaf, and then baked on hot stones.

In ancient Greece, for example, such sweet cakes were called plakus, a word that means flat. The ancient Greeks prepared them mainly with nuts and honey. These small cakes were served at the first Olympic Games, held in 776 BC.

The Romans made another type of flat cake, which was called satura - it consisted of wheat flour and olive oil and was tastier and more filling than that of the Greeks.

Cheese was used to make two types of pastries - one was called placenta, which was a salt cake, and libum - this was a sweet cake, from which today's cheesecake came.

Libum was offered as a gift from the gods when someone had a birthday. This custom passes in our days, because when someone has a birthday, we serve him a cake, right?

The Romans, who conquered new lands, brought this recipe to the western parts of Europe and the British parts. Gradually, this cheesecake became popular in England and Scandinavia, and information about its preparation can be found in some documents from the XV century.

There is a book from the Tudor era that is dedicated to the household, and there is also advice on how to make a cheesecake.
