I stumbled upon a Bulgarian site for a recipe for Vatican bread. I became curious, and the fact that this bread was made only once in my life was something I didn't like.

The other thing, that someone has to give you sourdough to do it, also seemed strange to me. After all, this recipe has a beginning, doesn't it? I started rummaging through Italian sites. And here is the story:

This is a cake (see the gallery) called San Antonio (sant'Antonio di Padova). It is also known as Padre Pio's cake or friendship cake.

San Antonio is celebrated on June 13 and is said to have kneaded bread and distributed it to the poor.

On this day, cakes are made and brought to church.

In Italy, it is also passed on in a chain, but anyone can do it themselves and without having to distribute the yeast. In most cases, the chain can be considered a friendship. The preparation is 10 days.

Here is the original recipe:

Some rules must be followed for making:

1. It should always start on Sunday;

2. The mixture should be kept at room temperature and never in the refrigerator;

3. The vessels used must be made of glass or ceramic;

4. Only a wooden spoon can be used and never with an ordinary spoon, mixer or hands;

5. The cake should be made by only one person and should not be touched with the hands.

Necessary products:

4 cups flour, 3 cups sugar, 1 cup milk, 1 cup oil, 1 cup chopped walnuts, 2 pinches of cinnamon, 150 g raisins, 1 apple, 2 eggs, 2 packs. vanilla, 1 pack. baking powder, 1 pinch of salt, powdered sugar for decoration

Preparation:

1 day Sunday

Put 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of sugar in the bowl where you will make it. Do not stir, but cover with a towel or cling film;

2 days

Just stir with a wooden spoon and cover again;

3rd and 4th day

Do not touch it;

5 days

Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk, but DO NOT stir, cover;

6 days

Stir and cover;

7, 8 and 9 days

Do not touch it;

10 days

Mix well and if you plan to distribute, put in 3 cups of the mixture. In the rest (4) add 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup oil, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, raisins (pre-soaked in warm water), finely chopped apple, 2 eggs, vanilla, baking powder and a pinch of salt.

Mix well, put in a suitable baking dish, make 3 wishes for your loved ones, pray and bake at 180 degrees for 35-40 minutes. When the cake has cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

If you want to make the cake just for you, start the preparation on day 5. You can choose a Saint or make it for a special day for you.
