Kulantro, also known as Chadon Benny in the English-speaking Caribbean, is an herb that gives dishes a very interesting flavor. It is widely used in the cuisine of Trinidad and Tobago - in fact, it is one of the key herbs in cooking in this double island republic.
Sometimes used in Asian sushi. It originates from Mexico, South and Central America, but is also grown in Hawaii, Cambodia, Vietnam and Mexico. It grows all year round in areas where the climate is hot and humid.
Culantro or coriander have a similar aroma, but one is not synonymous with the other. They are actually distant cousins, but Culantro is much more intense and powerful (about 8 to 10 times stronger) in its aroma. Therefore, it must be used wisely and carefully.
The plant has long and serrated leaves and blooms in blue. Once it blooms, it begins to lose its flavor. Chadon Benny can be turned into a paste along with seasonal greens. It is considered a mandatory spice when roasting shark.
It is often added to beans and rice recipes. When freshly chopped, it can taste meat, seafood, vegetables and even fruits.
Prepared for tea, Kulantro successfully soothes the symptoms of colds and flu and despite its strength relieves upset stomach. When cooking, it is good to add with it at the beginning, so that it is possible to unlock its taste as fully as possible.
Kulantro is a very popular herb in Caribbean cuisine. There is part of a famous vegetable mix called Sofrito.
