Fats found in products offered in fast food chains can help prevent the most deadly form of skin cancer, according to a study. Experts have found that palmitic acid, which is contained in products such as burgers, biscuits, snacks, is involved in the pigmentation process and thus can protect the skin from harmful mutations in skin cancer.
While fast food can have detrimental effects on the heart and brain, it can prevent life-threatening melanoma. In the last 30 years alone, the number of people suffering from the dreaded disease has increased by 12%, according to statistics.
According to scientists, the discovery of the beneficial properties of palmitic acid it can be crucial in the fight against melanoma and help the groups in society that are most prone to its development - redheads, people with many moles and those with extremely delicate and thin skin.
Exposure to ultraviolet light, whether from the sun or from tanning beds, can damage DNA and cause mutations that can lead to skin cancer. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts have proven their claims after laboratory tests on mice. They subjected the rodents to an intensive diet with large amounts of palmitic acid.
As a result, rodents significantly increased their pigmentation. The mice were then irradiated with ultraviolet light, with only 11% developing melanoma. In another group of rodents that did not take the acid, the percentage was 54.
The MC1R gene plays a crucial role in pigmentation in humans and mice. Its activation in laboratory-grown human skin cells stimulates melanin production and enhances DNA repair after ultraviolet radiation, scientists have also shown.
Palmitic acid is a fatty acid or lipid present in saturated fats, but its role in darkening the skin has been unknown until now.
This fatty acid is usually found in fast food such as burgers, french fries, biscuits.
This does not necessarily mean that we start eating constantly and only with fast snacks to prevent melanoma. This would be detrimental to the overall condition of our body. The goal of our study is to reap all the benefits of palmitic acid and create a drug that will help without harm, says the study's lead author, Dr. Ruth Chui.
