A label that clearly describes where the meat comes from in the moussaka served to us in a restaurant was requested by the European Parliament on the recommendation of inspectors from the European Commission.

The proposal is for the owners of restaurants and other establishments offering cooked dishes to add labels in their menus in which to inform the customers about the origin of the meat in the dishes.

The European Parliament is pushing for this change after the horse meat scandal, which was offered in a number of restaurants in the form of meatballs, sausages and lasagna, which unsuspecting customers ate, believing they were eating beef.

Following the horsemeat scandal, it is now up to us to regain consumer confidence, says Giovanni la Via, chairman of the Environment Committee.

He urges the European Commission to draw up a legal proposal obliging restaurateurs in the Member States of the European Union to label their dishes.

Of course, we must ensure that this does not lead to additional burdens on small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector, La Via added in its address.

However, restaurant owners oppose the proposal. According to them, the introduction of such an ordinance will require a price increase of between 15 and 50%, which will ultimately affect the customers themselves.

However, an analysis by the French Consumers' Association came out with a much more modest price increase - an average of only 0.6%.

According to the European Parliament, between 30% and 50% of all dishes in Europe contain processed meat. Most of it is sold in restaurants and other outlets, where food without a label is freely available.

The new initiative by MEPs is part of their global campaign on food labeling.

An ordinance has already been adopted, according to which it will be obligatory to put labels on fresh, chilled or frozen meat, regardless of its type. The provision enters into force on April 1 this year.
