Advertising of GMO foods has been banned. The change was voted on at first reading in parliament.
132 deputies voted For and only one Against the new Food Bill. It introduces some new rules for food labeling and advertising.
The law prohibits the advertising of GMO foods in Bulgaria, as well as foods for which there are regulatory restrictions on use by children. This includes any advertisements or commercials aimed at a child audience in which children participate or present children consuming foods of this type.
The list of banned foods includes those with ingredients and substances such as fats, trans fatty acids, salt and sugar that do not meet the requirements for a healthy diet.
The commissions of the Association of Soft Drinks Producers in Bulgaria were the first to oppose the bill. They do not agree with the bottled water section. The deputies did not accept their motives.
The next step is the establishment of a National Food Council as a permanent advisory body coordinating state policy in the food sector. Representatives of all stakeholders will be able to take part in it.
