Mother Nature is full of surprises. One of them is the fungus Clathrus archeri, which has a rather strange and even a little sinister appearance. It is also known as the Devil's Fingers or the octopus mushroom. It is grown mainly in New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia.
In fact, this plant looks more like a living thing than a mushroom. And while all the mushrooms make their way through the soil, it develops into an egg-like sac.
The very process of dissolving the egg is quite sinister. From it, strange-looking tentacles begin to appear, which can be from 4 to 8 in number and 5 to 20 centimeters long.
They have a rough surface with a bright pink color and a specific odor that attracts insects. Insects spread the spores of fungi and thus they multiply.
According to scientists, these mushrooms are edible only when in their ovoid form, but have an unpleasant taste and smell of rot. In Bulgaria it can be found on our Black Sea coast near the tourist complex "Duni".
It is included in the Red List of Mushrooms in Bulgaria because it is an endangered species.
