The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Professor Dimitar Grekov, announced that a check will be made for the presence of growth hormones in the chicken meat, which is distributed in the trade network in the country.
The inspection will cover all units in the chain - from producers of chicken meat and blanks in poultry farms, to production workshops, warehouses and shops.
The inspection was assigned to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) and is in response to a number of publications in the domestic press about the possible injection of chickens on farms with hormones for faster growth.
The Minister of Agriculture threatened to be uncompromising towards the violators, if any. In case of established violations, the producers will be imposed severe financial sanctions, and the more striking cases will be sanctioned by closing the production base.
According to Professor Grekov, there is no reason for concern among the people of our country. Despite the media reports, no such violations have been detected on the territory of our country so far.
None of the studies on chicken meat so far have found fast-growing hormones that could be potentially harmful to consumers.
Monitoring for the presence of prohibited substances and substances in chicken meat is carried out not only on the territory of Bulgaria, but also on the territory of all countries within the European Union. In the last 15 years, there have been no violations in this direction in any of the Member States.
Experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency are adamant that hormones have never been allowed or even more used in Europe and America.
In practice, the use of protein growth hormones in birds is impossible for several reasons. If the hormones are put into the feed mix, they will be metabolized (broken down) in the glandular stomach of the chickens.
The second option is to be injected. This must be done every day and applied to each individual bird, which is practically impossible or so time consuming that the result will be questionable or unprofitable.
It has long been speculated that the rapid growth of broilers is due to the use of banned substances.
The truth is that this is the result of creating and maintaining optimal baselines and parental lines, as well as feeding feed that optimally combines protein, vitamins and minerals.
