Lefer / Pomatomus saltatrix / is a predatory sea fish, which is the only member of the Lefer family. It is known as gofan and chernokop. Lefer is one of the most valued fish for both sport and industrial fishing. It is widespread throughout the world. Lefer inhabits both great depths and very shallow places. It is a herd marine fish inhabiting warm sea areas and is the most predatory fish found in our sea.

Lefer reaches 130 cm and weighs about 14 kg. Fish about 200 g are called black grouse, from 200 g to a kilogram and a half - leferand the largest are gofan. Unfortunately, there are not that many big fish in our waters.

The most commonly caught specimens are between 1-3 kg. Blackbirds are like piranhas, because when they gather in flocks, they destroy three times more fish than they eat. They breed in the months of July-September. Overall, the lefer has incredible taste, which makes it one of the most expensive fish on fish markets. The leper spoils very quickly if it is not frozen or placed on ice immediately after the catch.

Low in fat, lefer contains protein, vitamins A, B5, B6, B12, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, arginine, cysteine, tryptophan and others.
