Regular consumption of fatty foods leads to structural and functional changes in our nasal system, a recent study found. In addition to obesity and impairment of the functions of organs and systems in the human body, it also leads to olfactory disorders.
This study is the first of its kind to identify fat as a risk factor for olfactory function in humans.
The study was performed on mice that were divided into two groups. The first was subjected to a diet that included high-fat foods, and the second was fed normally.
After 6 months, the results showed that the risk group, consuming a lot of fat, had impaired olfactory ability by up to 50%. They lost some of their ability to recognize odors because a large number of brain cells responsible for transmitting the signal were found to be lost.
The results are complemented by the statement of Prof. Debra Fadol that even after the first group of mice reduced fat consumption, their olfactory system has not fully restored its abilities.
In the future, the research team intends to investigate the impact of high blood sugar levels. They are intrigued by whether elevated blood glucose levels would affect the ability to distinguish and recognize odors.
Obesity in humans is a widespread problem worldwide. It is also a cause of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Also worrying in recent years is the fact that the age limit is falling and more and more young children and teenagers are at risk.
Experts from all over the world call for healthier eating and physical activity at least three times a week. This is because the heart is like a muscle - it needs daily training to develop and function normally.
