Researchers at the University of Toronto have tracked how much salt they eat in 12 years and how much 1262 men and women between the ages of 67 and 84 move. They also assessed their mental state at the beginning of the study and at the end of each year.

The results show that the combination of a lot of salt and lack of exercise is especially detrimental for the elderly. A large amount is defined as more than 3090 mg of pure sodium. That's a little more than a teaspoon of salt.

Reducing salt intake by 6 g per day can reduce mortality from stroke by about a quarter and from heart attack by about a fifth. That means more than 2.6 million fewer people die each year!

Unfortunately, limiting salt is a difficult task, as about 75% of it is found in processed products such as canned food, sausages, cheese, bread, spices, sauces.

About 10% is in fresh produce and only 15% is what we add to food when cooking or eating.

Excess salt in the body leads to fluid retention, impairs kidney and liver function, is deposited in tissues and joints, sclerosing arteries.

Salt sucks moisture from our skin. It becomes sluggish and dry. Drinking plenty of fluids, eating fruits and vegetables helps to remove excess fluids in the body.
