Cheap Easter cakes appeared on store shelves days before the bright Christian holiday of Easter. The traditional pastries for the holiday are offered at prices of BGN 1.5 per 500 grams.
The extremely attractive price of Easter cakes is due to the fact that they practically lack eggs, sugar and flour.
Those ingredients that are mandatory for kneading traditional bread have been replaced with extremely harmful hydrogenated butter, sweeteners, colors and flavors.
Hydrogenated butter, which Bulgarian nutritionist Professor Donka Baikova calls a modern killer, is the main ingredient in the ready-made Easter cakes that will be placed on our Easter table.
In fact, hydrogenated butter is present in about 30 percent of all confectionery products offered on the Bulgarian market - dessert bars, dry pastes, waffles, croissants, french fries, dairy products and more. It provides a representative structural and shape of the cakes.
Nutritionists agree that hydrogenated oil poses a major health risk. Its use can cause heart disease, increase total and bad cholesterol in the body, increase triglyceride levels and the risk of atherosclerosis, strokes and heart attacks.
However, manufacturers prefer to use hydrogenated butter to make Easter cakes. In this way, on the one hand, they save on quality raw materials, on the other - on time, and offer Easter cakes at prices 20 to 50 percent lower than those of Easter cakes made according to a traditional recipe.
There is no legal mechanism by which the sale of unhealthy Easter cakes should be stopped, because from this year they are not included in bakery products, where standards have been introduced, but in pastries.
