The most serious concern about coffee consumption is the widespread belief that it raises blood pressure. However, this is not the case, scientists say.
Researchers from the School of Public Health at the University of Louisiana in New Orleans say they have found evidence that coffee does not actually raise blood pressure.
High blood pressure as well as hypertension can cause heart disease. This reduces life expectancy and can lead to heart attack or stroke. However, scientists have not found conclusive evidence that drinking large amounts of coffee increases a person's chances of becoming hypertensive.
Researchers in New Orleans have published the results of their study in the American Journal of Dietary Nutrition. In it, they combined a total of six similar studies, in which more than 170,000 people took part.
The results do not show a difference in the regular consumption of a cup of coffee and that of three coffees a day. It even turns out that even if you drink 5 or more glasses a day, it does not lead to hypertension.
Of course, to draw a definitive conclusion about the effect of coffee on blood pressure, scientists admit that they need a much larger amount of data.
Still, there is an easy method where you can check for yourself if coffee affects your blood pressure. To do this, measure it before and 30 minutes after drinking your coffee. If the value has increased by 5-10 mm of mercury, then you are reacting to the caffeine contained in coffee.
On the other hand, it also matters how often you drink coffee and how used you are to it. If you drink coffee infrequently, even a single dose can lead to a sudden rise in blood pressure.
Conversely, if you consume caffeine daily, your blood pressure levels will not change significantly, even with large doses of coffee. This is explained by the habituation that the human body develops to it.
