During the Christmas holidays we enjoyed the aroma of cinnamon. There is almost no dessert that can be prepared for the holiday and in which not a pinch of this aromatic spice is added. However, it turns out that this favorite flavor is harmful, especially when it comes to sweets that we buy ready-made from the store and in which there is cinnamon.

According to the European Union, the amount of spice in Kupeshki sweets is too large and this makes them harmful. The British press reported that the European Union will limit the content of cinnamon in sweets that are sold in stores.

The reason is that the intake of a large amount of the spice harms the body - the most used type of cinnamon cassia contains the substance coumarin.

Coumarin is a naturally toxic substance that (if taken in large quantities) can cause headaches as well as liver damage, the Daily Telegraph informs us. According to the researchers, the recommended daily dose is 0.1 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

The European Union has already adopted recommendations on the amount of cinnamon per kilogram of dough. The maximum dose of coumarin is 50 milligrams per kilogram of dough, which is used for products that are prepared and consumed several times a year. For pastries that are prepared and consumed almost daily, the recommended EU dose is 15 milligrams per kilogram of dough.

Cinnamon and its amount in sweets were discussed in Denmark during the Christmas holidays. Authorities there have announced their intention to limit the production of some of the most popular and traditionally prepared Christmas cinnamon rolls.

Danish confectioners have already invented another alternative for the preparation of these sweets - they will use another type of cinnamon, which does not contain such a large amount of coumarin - Ceylon version.

In the end, the authorities decided not to limit the production of cinnamon rolls until February. In Sweden, they decided not to take measures against cinnamon cakes at this stage.
