We eat every day, but very rarely do any of us think about the stages of nutrition and the process of digestion itself. The whole digestive process begins with the intake of food. Digestion is the process of processing food into a form in which it can be absorbed by our body.
The digestive system can digest almost any food we eat. Exceptions are cases in which we have a disease.
The structure of the digestive system is as follows:
- oral cavity;
- esophagus;
- stomach;
- small intestine;
- colon.
The digestive process begins in the mouth, where food is processed mechanically or chemically for a quarter of a minute. Chewing and salivation take place in our mouth, the bite of food is chewed with the help of saliva, then enters the esophagus and continues its way to the stomach.
The stomach is located between the esophagus and the small intestine, where the main digestion of food begins. Food that has already entered the stomach is processed thanks to the gastric juice. This happens in about 3 to 5 hours depending on the amount of food consumed.
Once started, it can last for hours as long as there is food in the stomach, and stops only after its complete emptying.
Food enters the small intestine through the stomach outlet. The small intestine is where most of the breakdown of nutrients takes place. Digestion in the small intestine is due to intestinal juice. In one day our body secretes about 3 liters of intestinal juice. The small intestine consists of three main parts - the duodenum, the large intestine and the ileum.
Digestion in the duodenum is due to bile and pancreatic juice. The duodenum is the so-called digestive laboratory.
The next phase of the digestive process is the entry of the resulting food slurry into the colon. The large intestine also consists of three main parts - the appendix, the colon and the rectum.
The bacterial flora of the large intestine converts digestive products. Such main processes are the fermentation of carbohydrates and the putrefaction of proteins. Waste material is expelled from the body within 24 hours.
