On the occasion of the World Anti-Hunger Day, the Bulgarian Food Bank is organizing a food collection campaign this weekend, which will be supported by several retail chains in Sofia.

Nearly 1.5 million Bulgarians living around the poverty line are expected to be supported under the 1 kg goodness initiative.

Donations for the poor will be collected in the form of food for people in need. Anyone can leave food in Carrefour hypermarkets in The Mall, Paradise or Bulgaria Mall, as well as in Piccadilly supermarkets in Mall of Sofia, Serdika Center and City Center Sofia this weekend.

The Organization reminds that every year in our country and in Europe are thrown nearly 80 tons of edible food that can feed the entire population of Bulgaria for 7 years.

According to data in the country, nearly 400,000 children do not eat regularly and go hungry.

The groups most at risk of poverty are children, low-income single pensioners, large families and people with disabilities.

As a result of the economic crisis, the income of every third family has fallen, with 29% of these people reducing their food costs and 8% missing one of the main meals of the day.

Bulgaria ranks third in poverty in Europe, but at the same time is among the leading countries in the European Union that throw out the most food.

Each package of donated food will feed children, the elderly and families in need. Those interested can also participate as volunteers in the distribution of information materials, description and transportation of food.

The foods that the Bulgarian Food Bank will accept are milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, eggs, cereals, fruits, vegetables, nuts, sugar, coffee, tea, water, canned food, chocolate and honey.

Food must be refrigerated, have the necessary documents of origin and remain for at least 10 days from their expiry date.
