The holiday of Panagia - the raising of bread has been celebrated in Kyustendil for many years. From the previous evening in the yard of the medieval church of St. Nikolay Chudotvorets in the village of Slokoshtitsa, Kyustendil municipality, ritually by the skillful hands of the hosts, Virgin Mary's pies were kneaded in the way it was in ancient times.
The tradition is that the kneading of this bread takes place around old churches that need restoration. Kneading the pies begins with a prayer. Girls bring spring silent water for the preparation of the ritual bread, and the participants in the ritual wash their faces and bosoms and in complete silence knead the Virgin Mary's pies.
The kneading begins with the woman mother, and then ends with the girl who accepts the tradition. When the bread is ready for baking, it is placed in trays (bread baking trays typical of the Kyustendil region). A towel (lid) is placed on them, after which it is covered with embers from the hearth.

Thus, according to folklore, the floor symbolizes the earth, the top is the sky, and the dough is life.
Making your own bread is the first step towards a sustainable lifestyle, say the participants in the ritual. According to them, bread, in addition to being something sacred, is a kind of art, but also a test of inner peace and the feelings you carry: If it becomes beautiful and delicious, then you feel good. It is no coincidence that in the folk tradition a sick person is not allowed to make bread.
It is very important to share the bread with someone. Characteristic of the ritual breads is the placement of a prosphore seal on them, as well as the fact that they are lean - only salt, water and flour.
