Salak / Salacca zalacca /, also known as snake fruit is a species of palm tree native to Malaysia and Indonesia. This palm tree belongs to the Arecaceae family and is close to date palms.

Salak is also called snake fruit because it has reddish-brown rough and scaly skin, which strongly resembles snake skin. Apart from Malaysia and Indonesia, the fruit is very famous in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

There are at least 30 varieties of herring that are grown in Indonesia.
