Nebiolo / Nebbiolo / is a red wine grape variety that has been known to growers for many centuries. It is typical of Italy, but is also grown in other countries, including the United States, Argentina, Mexico and Australia. The variety is also known by the names Pugnet, Chiavennasca, Spanna and Picotener.
Nebiolo easily recognizable. It has a medium-sized leaf, dark green, dense and soft, with a glossy surface, three-part or five-part. The lower part is covered with soft moss. The cluster in nebiolo is relatively large, with the shape of a cylinder, compact. The grains of this variety are not very large. They are rounded and colored in dark blue or deep purple. The flesh is juicy, covered with a thin skin. They give a dark red wine that has an orange tinge.
Nebiolo is a variety that is difficult to grow because it is pretentious in terms of soil and climate. The vines develop most successfully if they are planted on calcareous soils, and at the same time a plot with southern or southwestern exposure must be selected. The quality of the soil affects the taste of the fruit.
There are requirements for altitude, preferably between 150 and 300 meters. In addition, the place where the variety will be managed must be neither cold nor windy. Nebiolo vines are of medium growth. If grown under the right conditions, this variety blooms early.
At the same time, it ripens late, which is why the grape harvest occurs in October. Once planted in suitable terrain, the variety grows healthy and strong. In this situation, he rarely succumbs to disease or frostbite. Recently, efforts have been made to study the potential of this grape variety outside of Piedmont, Valtelina and Lombardy.
History of nebiolo
Nebiolo has a very old history. This grape variety originates from the region of Piedmont, Italy. It has been cultivated since Roman times. There are two assumptions about the origin of his name. Many believe that nebbiolo comes from the Latin word nobile, which translates as noble. However, some look for the name's roots elsewhere. According to them, the name nebbiolo is more likely to be related to the word nebbia, which translates as fog. In fact, fog is a common occurrence in Piedmont in October, when the ripe harvest is harvested.
Characteristics of non-biol
The wines that are extracted from nebiolo are characterized by garnet red color, but also have an orange tinge. The scent of the grape elixir is tempting and captivating. If you feel the aroma of the drink, you will immediately be mentally transported to a green meadow with many violets. Finger notes are also less noticeable. Very often flavors of small fruits such as plum, blackberry, raspberry, and also chocolate are added. Sometimes you can feel tea leaves, pink flowers, spices and resin.
Wines made from non-organic are highly alcoholic. The content of tannins in them is also not small. They are also characterized by excellent acidity. Nebiolo wine needs stable serious aging in barrels or bottles. It is believed that the aging of the drink in wooden barrels only helps him develop an aristocratic bouquet. That is why winemakers leave them to mature for decades. Quality wines such as Sizzano, Carema, Langhe Nebiolo are made from this grape. It is also part of some blended wines.
Serving nebiolo
The wine from nebiolo is elegant and fine. It deserves to be served with due care. For starters, choose the right glasses for the drink. Of course, you can opt for any classic wine glass, but true connoisseurs choose the glass with the most appropriate shape, in which every small detail reveals the best of the aristocratic nebiolo.
For him, a wine glass is recommended, which is elongated and by no means small. They expand smoothly and barely noticeably downwards, while at the top they are narrowed. This shape allows the fragrance to rise smoothly, and so the richness of the bouquet is felt most strongly. When serving, the wine should not be too cold. It is good for its temperature to vary between 16 and 18 degrees.
Combining wine with the right food often makes it difficult for us. The difficulty comes from the fact that the foods that are often present at our table may not be the most suitable for an appetizer of a given type of drink. Then we are faced with the dilemma of whether to comply with culinary rules or to rely solely on our own taste.
Everyone should decide this for themselves, but still we must not forget that the foods we choose should not overshadow the positive characteristics of wine and all its charm, but only to reveal and emphasize them. That is, we should not choose dishes that have sharp and intrusive flavors and aromas.
As for nebiolo, you can bet on beef supplements. You can choose Beef Rings with Tomato Sauce, Beef with Quinces, Roast Beef or Roast Beef. Beef dishes or dry appetizers would also do a good job. If you are one of the big lovers of dairy products, you can ignore meat and combine nebiolo with some kind of cheese. Here, gourmets strongly recommend blue cheese.
