Bratwurst / Bratwurst / is a type of sausage that is made from beef, pork or beef. This sausage is typical of Germany, where there are different varieties. They differ both in production technology and in composition.

As you can guess, the different varieties come in different sizes and colors. In Germany, bratwurst is also known as rostbratwurst and roster. A similar sausage is prepared in the United States, where it is simply called brat. It's August 16 International Brotherhood Day.

This sausage is usually grilled or fried. In addition, it can be boiled in broth or beer. He is an indispensable participant in the iconic Oktoberfest, which is organized every year in the city of Munich.

History of bratwurst

The name of the sausage comes from the Old German language, where the word brat is used to refer to finely chopped meat. Wurst means sausage. And although the word brat describes the way the sausage is made, modern Germans associate the name of the sausage with the German verb braten, which suggests that the product should be fried or baked.

The first written evidence of the existence of bratwurst dates back to 1313 and can be found in the city of Nuremberg, located in the state of Bavaria. Apart from its beautiful buildings, the place is also known as a center for the production of grilled sausages.

The presence of beef, veal and pork determine the complex composition of this type of sausage. It contains saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Sausage is a source of protein and cholesterol. It also contains elements such as sodium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, magnesium. It is also a source of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B4, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin D and vitamin K.

Like the dried fruit prepared in Bulgaria, so too the brotherhood of the Germans differed considerably in different parts of the country. However, there is nothing wrong with that, as the different regions reveal the charm of the sausage from their own angle. These sausages are usually made from pork, beef or beef, which can be minced finely or in bulk.

Each type of meat is minced separately, and a certain amount of bacon can be added. The individual meats are then mixed and minced again. Add black pepper, white pepper, salt, oregano, cumin or any other spices according to local cooking preferences. The resulting homogeneous minced meat is stuffed into cleaned animal intestines, which are left in a cool place.

Some sausages of this type are offered raw and others cooked. It can be said that the second type is more common because of this the brotherhood can be kept edible for a longer time. In addition, this condition of the sausage allows it to be grilled faster and easier.

Raw sausages of this type are pink in color. They can be sprinkled with spices in their composition. With them, cooking is more labor-intensive and requires more attention, as they must be baked evenly not only on the outside but also on the inside. Cooks advise to put them in hot water for 8-10 minutes before putting them on the fire. When cooking, keep them on the fire until they get a brownish crust.

Cooked bratwursts are characterized by a grayish color and firm consistency. Thanks to their pre-treatment, they can be grilled very quickly and easily. As here, there is no danger of the inside of the sausage remaining raw. Shortly after throwing them on the grill, you will notice an appetizing tan. Both raw and cooked bratwursts are very juicy and fragrant.

Types of bratwurst

We have already mentioned that they are prepared in Germany different types of bratwursts. Sausage cooked in Coburg is very popular. We have beef and beef with her. Season the meat with salt, pepper, nutmeg and lemon zest.

The Nuremberg sausage is well known. It is distinguished by its small size - it is a maximum of 10 centimeters long and does not weigh more than 30 grams.

Typically in Bulgarian, however, we can combine it with fresh salads of tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, turnips, beets, fresh cabbage and more. Suitable salads to garnish with sausage include Cauliflower Salad, Red Cabbage Salad, Onion Salad, Egyptian Salad and more.

Bratwurst usually served with mustard, ketchup or some spicy sauce. It is also used in various types of hot dogs, pizzas, spaghetti. As it goes well with all vegetables, it can be included in recipes for risotto, stews and casserole.
