According to a recent survey among EU member states, a person consumes about 14 kg of fish consumed per year. For comparison, the average statistical Bulgarian consumes a little over 4 kg of fish per year. And besides rivers, we even have a sea.

It is probably in this connection that we are the second most common cardiovascular disease in the EU, as the omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish strengthen the heart and take care of our health.

And in the course of these thoughts, it is definitely interesting to understand, since we are not big fans of fish and seafood, what exactly seafood we prefer. And this is where the surprise comes from.

Many believe that the sprat is among the favorite fish of the Bulgarians, accompanied by a mug of cold beer. And no one has forgotten the cult lines from the Bulgarian film Kit from 1970:

- Fish, but a toy…

- Tsatsa, but fish.

In fact, it turns out that even though we are not rich, we hold on to quality. According to statistics, in the first decade of this century, Bulgarians resting on their native sea emphasized squid. Not that they don't eat duck, horse mackerel and sprats, but more exotic fish and seafood are more popular.

According to the same statistics, octopuses are in second place in terms of seafood consumption. Here is the place where it should be clarified that the survey was conducted among Bulgarian beachgoers, when most people consume fish and seafood anyway.

It is also a customer inquiry. That is - it can not be a question of any official statistics, because it is not really calculated what fish is most often consumed by Bulgarians. And it is clear to everyone that squid and octopus are not sold in every Bulgarian trap.

According to the shared opinion of our compatriots, our more familiar fish such as mackerel, duck, horse mackerel, carrageenan, bonito, red mullet are already in third place. Many also love zargana. Only about 20 out of 100 prefer mussels, due to the fact that in many cases they are simply not cleaned well.
