Kalina / Viburnum opulus L. / is a low tree or highly branched shrub of the Elderberry family. Kalina is also called dagger, snowball, snowdrop, tutuniga, fairy tree and garmizh. The tree reaches a height of between 1.5 and 4 meters. Viburnum twigs are of two types - vegetative and flowering, with reddish-brown bare buds.

The bark of the old stems and branches is cracked, and the young stems are gray-brown, smooth and with a reddish tinge. Viburnum leaves develop bare stalks. The leaves are large, opposite, green and glabrous above, and bluish-green below, covered with hairs. The leaves reach a length of 10 cm.

Viburnum flowers are collected in large numbers, in apical umbellate inflorescences. The outer flowers are larger and sterile, and the middle flowers are funnel-shaped and bisexual. The calyx is five-parted, with five petals, numerous stamens.

The fruits of viburnum are oval and stone, shiny, light red, juicy, with a very bitter taste. They are as big as a pea. They usually have three seeds each. They ripen in September-October and last a long time after the leaves fall. Kalina blooms in May-June.

The viburnum occurs in rocky places, near shady and moist deciduous forests and shrubs in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, South America, Southeast Asia. It grows up to 2400 meters above sea level.
