The X-rays, also known as renklodi, are cultivated fruit trees belonging to the genus Prunus. X-rays are now thought to be a subspecies of the common plum (Prunus domestica). X-rays are bred mainly in Western Europe, and various varieties of this subspecies have been created. They can also develop in our country. In Germany these plums are called Reneklode or Ringlotte, in Poland and the Czech Republic they are known as ringle, in Hungary - as ringló. In Slovakia they are called ringloty, and in English-speaking countries - Greengages.
The X-rays are not particularly large trees. They reach a height of 7-8 meters. The crown of the tree has a slightly rounded shape. The bark is gray. The young branches are often nodded. They are painted red-brown. The leaves are elliptical in shape, up to 6-12 centimeters long. Their width can reach 5-6 centimeters. They are leathery, with a pointed end. The colors are single. They bloom with the appearance of the leaves. The fruits are rounded, pitted. The color of the fruit is different in different varieties. Plums can be colored in greenish, yellowish, blue and others.
Types of renglots
As already mentioned, there are many varieties of this subspecies. The so-called altan renglot is known in our country. It is characterized by large, weighing up to 45 grams of fruit. They are rounded and slightly flattened in the area towards the handle. Their flesh is yellow, watery, quite sweet, crunchy, pleasant to eat. It also has an attractive scent. The stone is easily separated from the watery consistency.
The flesh is covered with yellow to pink skin. It is possible that it has small reddish spots and wax. The fruits of the altan renglot are used in cooking and are used in the production of brandy. This variety is drought tolerant and relatively resistant to low temperatures. It can be grown in higher areas. It is not particularly picky about the soil. Its fruits are ready for harvest in mid-August.
The large green renglot is also known. It is a strongly growing tree that forms an oval crown. The fruits are rounded, weighing about 30-35 grams, colored yellow. The flesh is yellowish, watery, with a sweet-sour taste. The stone is relatively easy to separate. The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption or after heat treatment. Big green renglotta is among the fruit trees in which there is a medium early flowering. It is not very sensitive to late spring frosts. The variety is considered not to be affected by early brown rot from droughts.
Collection and storage of X-rays
The X-rays gather as the tree collapses. For this purpose, the branches of the plant can be shaken. The fruits are removed when they are lightly pressed with a rod. It is good before cleaning the area under the tree to be cleaned of grass and debris. It will be even easier to perform the task if you spread nylon or canvas under the fruit tree. If the fruit is picked at partial ripeness, it could withstand transport. Otherwise they can become expensive.
If you do not have the opportunity to grow renglots, you could buy from the market. Make sure the plums are firm, smooth and without damage to the surface. They should not have an unpleasant odor. If you notice that the fruits are too soft and smell strange, you better not take them. If the renglots you have are partially ripe, they can be stored for several days in a cool place. However, if they are well ripened, it is not advisable to wait long with their use. Try to eat them as soon as possible.
Ranglots in cooking
The X-rays are fruits that can be used in cooking in the same way as the fruits of Prunus domestica. They are successfully used in various pastries, including cakes, cupcakes, pies, tartlets, biscuits, Easter cakes, rolls. They are used in making jams, jellies, compotes, oshav. They can be used to make nectars and juices and even brandy. In some countries they also produce wine. When fresh, they can be included in any fruit salad. Especially nice is the combination between renglots and citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines and kiwis, bananas and more.
