Broccoli is a variety of cauliflower. It was first cultivated in Italy, during the Roman Empire. It is selected and developed as a vegetable from wild cabbage, imported into the Empire by traveling merchants from Asia Minor. In France, broccoli was imported by Catherine de 'Medici.

The word "broccoli" itself comes from the Latin word "bracchium", which translates as "branch" or "hand". Most likely the name comes from the branched shape of the stem.

Broccoli, in addition to green, can be white or purple. There are varieties such as cauliflower broccoli, which strongly resembles cauliflower, and broccoli broccoli, which is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. Different varieties of broccoli have differently branched stems.

In Bulgaria, the production of broccoli is not very common. Nevertheless, the culture grows well in our country.

The usable part of the broccoli is the colored buttons, separated in a compact head, and part of the stem belonging to it. In some varieties of broccoli only a central flower head is formed, and in others a different number of side heads are formed after cutting.

Broccoli does not have high heat requirements. It grows best at a temperature not higher than 25 ° C and not lower than 10 ° C. The perfect environment is between 16 and 21 ° C.

When you decide to grow broccoli, you must first choose the variety. We offer many varieties of seeds from the Netherlands, Sweden, Israel, Japan and others. The most suitable for our conditions are hybrids, Monopoli Marathon, Fiesta, Coronado and others.

To get a good production, you need to get young seedlings, about 30-40 days. Its leaves should be well formed and the roots - healthy. This is a guarantee for easy and fast capture of young plants and for their good development further.

The production of broccoli in Bulgaria should be late. The seeds are sown in mid-June in an open field, and for the southern regions at the end of the month. About 100 g of seeds are needed for 1000 sq.m. Broccoli for autumn production is planted in late July - early August.

The most important thing for the good production of broccoli is their fertilization. It grows best on light, well-aerated soils with a neutral reaction. The combined fertilization of broccoli with manure imported in the preparation of the soil and mineral fertilizers is suitable. Nitrogen fertilizer is applied twice, in equal doses in the form of fertilization, together with hoeing.

Broccoli is watered regularly, and it needs the most water during the growth of the heads and the formation of the side heads, when the water supply is more frequent. It is susceptible to pests and diseases, which is why it is necessary to frequently inspect seedlings and young transplanted plants, in order to timely intervention and effective pest control.

Another important point is the harvesting of the produce. This is done when the flower heads have reached consumptive maturity and are dense and compact, sometime in September-November. The flower head is cut off together with 10-15 cm from the stem, which is also suitable for consumption.
