September 6 marks World Noodle Day. The tradition was introduced by the Chinese, who are believed to be the first to eat the delicious ribbons.
Noodles are a Chinese culinary invention that is spread all over the world today. However, the Italians claim that they found them. There are a number of stories and legends that support the theory of both peoples.
The thin strips of noodles are very similar to Italian spaghetti. This is where the dispute over their origin begins. The basic theory is that in 1296 the navigator Marco Polo brought noodles from China to Venice.
Another claims that thin ribbons became popular in Italy thanks to Arab conquerors.
An archeological discovery made 7 years ago shed light on the origins of the noodles. Then in northwestern China, scientists found a pot of noodles over four millennia.
Noodles are easy to prepare. They are ready in just 15 minutes and can feed the whole family. They are often called rice spaghetti. They are an Asian pastry made of boiled dough.
Interestingly, the word noodles actually comes from the German word noodle, in Latin nodus, ie - node. There, however, they call noodles under the common name pasta. The word pasta comes from Latin and literally means pastry dough. This makes determining the homeland of the noodles even more difficult.
There are several basic differences between noodles and pasta. While the Chinese invention is made from wheat, rice, papuda, acorns and starch, the paste is made from durum wheat, water, eggs and semolina. It is dried and fresh while the noodles are cooled and fried.
There are also differences in the ways of consumption. The pasta is consumed hard and the noodles are very soft.
And while Italy is passing a law banning the production of pasta other than wheat, the Chinese have identified noodles as the best invention of the 20th century.
