The German nation boasts a genuine sense of alcohol. Not so well known, however, is the fact that in Germany some varieties of white grapes are grown, from which golden wines are made with a strong fruity aroma, peach and golden apple flavor.
As early as the thirteenth century, the monks who made wine noticed the exceptional cold resistance of some varieties of white grapes, especially on sunny days. That is why today we will introduce you to three world-renowned German wines, which are quite unfairly neglected because of their more famous brethren from France and Italy.
1. Riesling
The secret of a perfectly made Riesling is in the unique harmony between sugars and acids, combined - depending on its origin - with a refined filigree structure or a powerful aroma. Even the sweetest Rieslings have a stable acidic structure that gives them incredible aging potential.
Good Riesling wines are never too alcoholic or heavy, on the contrary - they stand out with incredible freshness. The typical Riesling has a pale yellow, sometimes green, color in the first few years of life. With age, the color becomes more intense and mature Rieslings are presented in rich, lush gold.
2. Müller-Thurgau
It was introduced in 1882 by the Swedish breeder Hermann Müller, who lived in the town of Thurgau. This variety was known to be even more resistant to climate change than Riesling. It ripens later, in late September.
Mueller-Thurgau grapes can be used to make incredible high-quality wines, but unfortunately the variety grows best on soil that is now reserved only for the Riesling. There are very few winemakers who would replace the famous German variety with Müller-Thurgau, which makes wine less and less common nowadays.
3. Sylvaner
This is a variety of white grapes and corresponds to about 8% of the country's production. This variety is believed to have been brought to the country from Transylvania in the 19th century and was very popular at the time, although it declined over time.
It is unpretentious to the conditions and ripens early. The wine made from it has a bright, memorable taste, with a floral and fruity aroma. As it belongs to the category of heavier wines, Silvaner combines extremely well with traditional German delicacies.
