Midsummer's Day (Yanevden, Ivanden, Dragiyka) is a Bulgarian holiday of old origin. It is marked on June 24th every summer. In our holiday calendar he is also present as Enio bilber. Some also call it the day of God's natural mysteries because of the extraordinary energy with which it is charged.
On the same day, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates The day of John the Baptist and for this reason the rituals on the occasion of the two feasts approach and even intertwine.
The old people say that the beginning of winter starts today and Enio puts on his coat and goes for snow. It is said that in the morning of Midsummer's Daywhen the sun rises, it trembles and whoever sees it will be in good health all year round.
According to folk beliefs as well on Midsummer's Day the herbs have the most powerful healing power and help even with very serious diseases. It is said that it is best to pick medicinal herbs at dawn at sunrise, because that is when they have the most powerful power.
It is also believed that St. Enio helped childless families in the same way that God helped Zacharias and Elizabeth to have a son, St. John the Baptist.
According to the belief of Midsummer's Day good wishes come true and with the performance of the old rites the people celebrated the emergence of a new family.
On Midsummer's Day, Midsummer's bread is made, prepared according to all the rules:
- The flour must be mixed with a green twig;
- Instead of water, the bread should be mixed with a decoction of seven green herbs;
"The cake next to the icon of St. John the Baptist must spend the night with a candle standing in the sand of the Jordan River." Then in the morning in the church it should be consecrated in front of the icon of St. John the Baptist. Then to be distributed with a lot of love for health, prosperity and success.
They are made on Midsummer's Day and dishes with seven herbs. For example, sorrel soup, vegetable soup with mushrooms and roasted corn.
