The food that Bulgarians buy and consume is 65 percent foreign production. The forecasts are that next year the Bulgarian products on the market will be only 20 percent.

According to Dimitar Zorov - chairman of the Association of Dairy Producers in Bulgaria, domestic production is about to be completely destroyed. According to him, FOCUS News Agency in neighboring Romania has a better policy that protects local producers.

Romanians have also taken other anti-crisis measures - reducing food VAT from 24% to 9%. This will further stimulate purchasing power - Zorov commented to Focus.

The expert also says that the European products that are imported in our country have a practice of different name and labeling. This most often happens with semi-finished products, which are named as yellow cheese, intended for the Russian market before the embargo is imposed.

Attempts to compensate the milk processors in Bulgaria were unsuccessful, because when asked for additional support to producers, Europe responded that there is no crisis with milk in our country.

A poll conducted a few weeks ago showed, on the other hand, that 94% of Bulgarians prefer to consume feeds the native production. Most people in our country also believe that the government should support Bulgarian producers more.

In TNS Opinion surveys, 81% of respondents said they were interested in the location of the workshop from which the product originated, and 71% preferred products manufactured in the same location as theirs.

For 61% of respondents, the production of meat, meat products and minced meat in their area is not enough. For 89% of respondents, local and central authorities need to make more efforts to produce more local food.

There is a need to build more farmers' markets and food cooperatives from which customers can buy quality food.
