The President of the Union of Livestock Breeders Penka Hristova announced that the fresh milk from which Bulgarian cheese is produced is imported en masse from Germany.

According to the expert, the high prices of native milk force producers to procure the raw material from foreign companies.

Most Bulgarian milk processors buy milk from European Union countries because it is much cheaper for them, because higher subsidies are granted in Western countries.

Bulgarian companies fail to fulfill their orders with the milk produced in our country, and therefore are forced to buy the raw material from abroad. The largest Bulgarian companies, producers of dairy products use German raw materials.

Penka Hristova also reports that in some regions of Bulgaria there is a shortage of milk, the largest being in Vratsa region. In Plovdiv and Stara Zagora, on the other hand, the industry is developing best.

Domestic breeders announced that a record rise in milk prices is expected after 2016, as then the quota regime for milk will be abolished.

According to Hristova, this will lead to free movement of milk and greater production. According to her, milk prices will have to be raised because our farmers do not receive large subsidies.

Livestock breeders in Bulgaria are now preparing for the International Exhibition in Qatar, where the possibilities for exporting Bulgarian meat to the emirate will be discussed.

However, the industry warns that despite the interest of many domestic producers, they will not be able to satisfy the Qatari market with enough meat.

Bulgarian companies are also negotiating for the export of chocolate and sponge cake to Dubai, as some of our companies have already left for the Arab country.

The initiative is encouraged by the Executive Agency for the Promotion of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

From February 22 to 27, domestic companies will meet with potential partners at the Gulfood exhibition, where European producers will be represented around the Arab world.
